Emergency Disaster Training

4CFV0109Weather patterns haven’t exactly been quiet around here lately and tornado & hurricane seasons are right around the corner. To prepare for the rest of 2014, The Birmingham Salvation Army will be offering disaster training for volunteers in April with classes available Friday April 11 or Saturday April 12 at our social services building located at 2130 11th Ave. North in Birmingham. Upon completion, volunteers will be able to serve in many capacities. They may be able to assist after an apartment fire or they may be used to support large-scale operations after a tornado or hurricane event. Those that get certified may also help coordinate disaster warehouses, maintain our fleet of disaster vehicles and more.  Volunteers with availability for deployment during the week are especially needed to handle emergencies that can happen anytime. Click on the time below for links to sign up or follow the link at the bottom of the page. Course info is as follows:

INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY DISASTER SERVICES – April 11th (8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.) or April 12th (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)   This intro course will provide volunteers an overview of the salvation Army’s mission and its role within disaster work. The course also prepares volunteer for deployment during a disaster. Those that become certified will qualify to assist with Salvation Army disaster operations in a variety of areas.

** Introduction to Emergency Services is a prerequisite for the SERVSAFE course**

SERVSAFE FOOD SAFETY AND HANDLING –  April 11th (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.) or April 12th (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.)    canteenWanna work on this big boy? Want to serve food from it in the middle of a disaster zone? Then you must have this certification. This is our canteen or “Mobile Kitchen” used to serve emergency personal and those affected right after a disaster. This course offers the basics of food handling. It explains how food can become unsafe through time-temperature abuse, cross-contamination and improper handling.

Our volunteers are the best in the business, and it’s the training that helps make that possible. We thank all of those that already serve and ask for anyone 18 years and older that would be interested in helping to sign up for these courses. They don’t come around often so take advantage of them, and they are FREE.
